Christmas angels, as depicted in the Bible, were the messengers of God that brought news of Jesus’ impending birth to Mary, the Wise Men and the shepherds. They were also depicted throughout that section of the bible as being a sort of guardian over the young child, and as mentors. They have since grown to have some very modern interpretations that go along with the holiday season.
For children, Christmas angels act as both guardians for their safety, as well as lookouts for Santa Claus. Their legend became intertwined with that of Santa, somehow, and now they keep an eye out for naughty children, and are thought to report back to everyone in charge, including the parents.
As decoration, they are very beautiful and fanciful sculptures, a priceless example of imagination brought to life. From dolls dressed angelically, to porcelain tree tops, they are everywhere during the holidays, and watching.
