The practice of hanging Christmas stockings dates back hundreds of years, and at first, actual stockings belonging to the children were used. It was a way for parents to give their children special treats, and the gifts were often very personalized to fit the child’s needs.
Christmas stockings today are still used in much the same way, only there is a larger variety of them available for use. Some will make their own, by crocheting them, or sewing them out of felt, large enough to contain the presents they wish to give their loved ones. Still others will be purchased, complete with presents from the local store.
It is always fun to try and match the stocking with the recipient. Making it yourself just adds pleasure, especially if you can find printed material to match. Imagine making one out of green felt, for example, to hide that special golf club.
